There are times when I have an idea and it's easy. Often though, the ideas that come to me definately present a big challenge. I love being challenged by different musical motifs and things I come up with but sometimes it just isn't going to happen, at least, not right now :( What I'm saying is that some ideas are better left on the back-burner for a while, escpecially if your learning to play and instrument or to sing.
For example you may be into microtonal like myself (There's a whole world out there inbetween our twelve tones per octave!) That's great, but what will you do? Let's face it, microtonal resources are scarce even online. Sure if your a programmer and are great at math and intonation you can do it but in the real world of musicians who play music and that's it, it's going to be a little more difficult. You may have to design and build and instrument to play the tones other than the 12 we normally use but depending on your design it will be expensive and difficult and it takes alot of time. It may be incredibly worth it in the end, but really, if you want to do it, make sure you can do it. You want to build some kind of keyboard instrument, good luck, your gonna need some kind of mechanic knowledge and decent wood-working tools and it's gonna be alot a $$$$! Unless you buy cheap wood, but even then it's gonna cost some dough.
If you want to get into that, great! but it's just gonna take alot of time and effort so don't think you can build an instrument while your still trying to learn to play the guitar and sing and program c++ and learn to draw at the same time.
I truly want to create my own instruments some day but I realize that that kind of goal is not for now because I'm still learning the Piano and Guitar and when you live at home without a job, you just can't get the money required. So I will do it when I'm sure I'm ready to but for now, I'm going to do my best on what I've started so far. I have several instrument ideas, but they all require a good deal of money and some tools, I don't even have a band-saw or a drill press so that poses a bit of a problem. Don't get me wrong, if you can build an instrument and want to really commit to it, then do it! You won't regret it if you carefully do it and don't have too many other things to do. ^__^
